Course Description

This experiential course explores a range of practices related to embodied drama training through the use of masks. Beginning with the neutral mask, students investigate neutrality as a foundation for performance and character creation, developing awareness of space, movement, rhythm, and the expressive potential of the body. The course also introduces expressive mask traditions, including Commedia dell’Arte and grotesque masks, through physical and vocal exploration, improvisation, and creative performance work.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • create and communicate meaning through movement, imagery, and the integration of diverse artistic materials and media;
  • devise and perform theatrical scenes that take into account spatial, temporal, physical, and psychological dimensions of character and action;
  • apply principles of neutral and expressive mask work in performance practice;
  • demonstrate an embodied understanding of performance processes at individual and collaborative levels;
  • develop creative and interpretative skills through physical and vocal experimentation.
